CANTON GOURMET: AUTHENTIC AND FILLING CANTONESE

SPONSOR'S LINK: CANTON GOURMET

Want Cantonese so authentic that you might have to rely on your pointing skills to place orders? Visit Canton Gourmet at 38-06 Prince Street for a hearty, laidback meal experience.

Seating here feels tight. On the upside you won’t have to wait long, if at all. There is a second basement area to accommodate more diners when the restaurant gets crowded.

Once settled in, you may notice that staff is friendly and responsive, bringing out food quickly and checking up on your table every so often.* So, don’t sweat it if no one in your party speaks Cantonese—just point to the most appetizing pictures or below Chinese characters

Must-orders here are not healthy but totally worth the calories. Aptly-named is the Famous Golden Fried Rice (招牌金鑲銀炒飯), at $11.95 per plate of carb-loaded, scallion and raisin-infused goodness. Another contender is the Famous Garlic Aromatic Fried Chicken (招牌蒜香雞), which is exactly what the name suggests, only better.

And yes, those water tank creatures you’ve been eyeing could constitute the evening’s seafood, if your party is so inclined. If so, consider trying Canton Gourmet’s Dungeness Crab. The succulent crab meat is devoid of salt or additives that distract from the underlying sweetness. No wonder repeat visitors consider crab one of Canton Gourmet’s specialty dishes.

May Flushing Food suggest: getting back to your diet after visiting.
