WU CHINESE RESTAURANT: CANTONESE MAINSTAY ON MAIN

SPONSOR'S LINK: WU CHINESE RESTAURANT

Ever been sad you had not discovered a local gem sooner? Wu Chinese Restaurant was admittedly one of those pleasantly rude awakenings.

Situated at 411-2A Main Street, this unassuming restaurant is a must-try for its vast selection of great Cantonese eats.

As a cherry on top of your dining experience, the prices are a throwback to late 1990’s Chinatown (Manhattan). Ridiculously cheap. On typical weekdays, patrons arrive shortly after noontime in pairs or groups of three to four.

Regulars simply greet servers with curt familiarity, sit, and commence rapid-fire orders in Cantonese while leaving table menus untouched. Servers are equally pleasant yet quick. This humbling environ is a refreshing pause from the modern-day bustle back outside on Main Street.

For starters, food comes out in oversized portions and slightly-anachronistic (by decade, not century!) melamine plate/utensil styles. Try congee with pork preserved egg (don’t let the price tag of $3.25 per bowl deceive you, for this easily feeds two people).

Another hit is the sautéed string beans ($9.95), with their robust shells housing succulent and tender beans inside. Finally, don’t forget to sample some of the array of wonton soups ($3.95 and up per family-style bowl) and lo mein dishes ($4.75 and up for vegetarian options; $5.95 and up for meat variations).

Still hungry? Good. Any real Cantonese meal has plenty of seafood. Ask for a steamed flounder ($17.95 renders you a huge catch), oyster with ginger and scallion ($16.95), or Hong Kong Style Lobster (price varies).

May Flushing Food suggest: Coming here with a Cantonese friend and watching their eyes glaze over.
