When around Northern Boulevard, it can be tough to narrow down your dinner options. After all, this strip happens to be an up-and-coming New York metro area Koreatown, trailing behind only its Manhattan and Fort Lee counterparts. But, if you like spicy South Korean comfort food (think tasty potato broth cooked right in front of you), the decision isn’t impossible, after all. Just bring a group of friends to Geo Si Gi, located at 152-28 Northern Boulevard.
Inside, a wooden-themed ambience is as welcoming as the place is (usually) crowded. This might be because Geo Si Gi boasts the best soju specials in the Flushing Murray Hill area ($3.95 per bottle!)
—Back to that comfort food. After familiar Korean appetizers such as kkakdugi (radish kimchi) and perhaps haemul paejun (seafood scallion pancake), you’re in for the real treat: gamjatang (potato soup). Geo Si Gi uses pork bone to enhance the gamjatang to something irresistibly savory. Most first-timers opt for the Geo Si Gi Gamjatang (small is $31.95 but feeds at least three), which yields your group a hearty casserole dish brought to your table in an individual heater. Health nuts will love that there are plenty of vegetables in the casserole. Meanwhile, meat lovers will especially relish the pork meat as it seems to melt right off the loin bones.*
And that’s not it! Afterwards, demand some bokeumbap, and the servers will make the second portion of your dish by cooking rice in the leftover gamjatang broth.
To top off your Southern Korean comfort food experience, the menu here is completely in Korean. No worries, because the wait staff will happily and patiently guide you through your order. Their attentiveness also ensures that empty glasses don’t stay empty for long, if at all.**
May Flushing Food suggest: coming in a big group in order to have a chance of polishing off the heaping portions.
